There are dozens upon dozens of things you could do when you arrive, and lots of places to visit as well. It may be far from the biggest state in India, but it offers you plenty to see and enjoy while you are there.

It makes sense therefore to put some virtual legwork into your holiday plans before you book your holiday to Goa. Get to know it a bit by going online and figuring out what is where. Not only will this help you to choose the best part of Goa to stay in, it will also give you some great ideas for days out.

For instance Vasco da Gama is Goa’s biggest city, and it is definitely worth a visit. If you want to stay in the city rather than heading for a beach based location this could be the perfect solution for you. Alternatively you might want to get an idea about Goa’s history, in which case sites like the Bom Jesus Basilica (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) might be of interest.

Of course a lot of people will simply want to head on down to the beaches, Vagator Beach being just one choice you have to consider. But even then it is worth making a list of nearby sights you want to see once you get there. You can discover more when you arrive, but getting to know Goa before you even leave home is a great idea. It gives you a chance to learn from other people and see whether they have found places you hadn’t previously known about.

Some people visit Goa in their summer months, so they can enjoy nothing more than relaxing on the beach and getting some much needed downtime. But if you want more than that – and some people do – make sure you do some checking in advance. This will enable you to see if you can create a perfect list of delights to enjoy when you are there.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Why is Anjuna a Popular Spot in Goa?

If you are considering having a holiday in Goa, you have probably come across several place names in your search. These will have come up as potential spots in which to spend a holiday there, and one of them is probably called Anjuna.

When you start to look into Anjuna in more detail you will start to realise why it is a popular location for people to visit. First of all it is situated on the coast and thus there is good access to a beach front location. If your idea of a sensational holiday involves a beach and lots of relaxation, you will certainly love what Anjuna has to offer.

This is only a village though, so you won’t have a huge area to explore once you get there. This could be seen as a plus point in some ways as some people prefer to holiday away from the larger towns and cities.

Make no mistake though, parties are still held here and it can be quite a lively spot to visit during the height of the summer. Trance parties take place on the beach itself, making it less than quiet during the evenings. However it still caters for lots of people during the day if they are trying to find somewhere appealing and relaxing to chill out. As you can imagine, it is quite a contrast between styles between the daytime and the night time!

However, even if parties are not your thing, you will definitely want to be at the beach in Anjuna on a Wednesday. This is when people flock to the local market, which is held right here and has a plethora of delightful merchandise to consider for purchase. You will no doubt find it difficult to resist the clothing and other items that are regularly sold from here every week.

As you can see Anjuna can be quite a chameleon in terms of what it has to offer. From reclining on the sands to parties and right through to market stalls, it is a veritable cornucopia of entertainment and liveliness. Don’t miss it.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Can You Visit Vasco Da Gama?

If you know anything at all about explorers, this might come to you as rather a strange question. After all, Vasco da Gama was an explorer from Portugal who lived from the mid 1400s to around 1524. So surely then you wouldn’t really be able to pay him a visit?

This is true, at least if you take the question in the title of this post literally. If you don’t, you will realise that Vasco Da Gama is also a city in Goa, named after the great explorer himself. So if you are planning on paying Goa a visit anytime soon, you can look to see if you are staying anywhere near the city that has been named in his likeness.

This city has gone through periods where its name has been in danger of being changed, but as of the present time it is still possible to go to Vasco Da Gama. You will probably hear it referred to as Vasco though, as it is generally called this by many of the people in the area.

There are some nice beaches here, but one in particular – Bogmalo Beach – is really only suitable for sunbathing. The waters are quite dangerous and although swimming is possible it can be a risky proposition. Enjoy it for the views and for the ability to stretch out and relax on the sands, rather than anything else.

Vasco is not one of Goa’s best attractions, it should be said, as you would not want to spend an entire holiday here. But if you happen to be flying into the nearby airport, or travelling through it on your journeys through Goa, you should take the time to stop off for a day to see another side of Goa itself. Those who are interested in architecture will find plenty to appreciate in the mish mash of buildings from times gone by as well as from the present day. This may not be the most attractive city as far as tourists are concerned, but it is still worth exploring for a short time if you are in the area.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Dudhsagar Falls In Goa

Goa is often referred to as one of the most sparkling places in all of India. It has plenty to share with those who make the trip to see it for sure, and we are not only referring to the beaches that are nothing short of spectacular. It also has its fair share of other sights in nature – sights which have plenty to amaze you with and lots to appreciate.

A good example of how Goa is constantly able to take your breath away is the Dudhsagar Falls. You will find it on the Mandovi River, and one of its key points is that the waterfalls are several in number – four to be exact. This makes for a beautiful scene and one that many tourists make the effort to go and see each year.

Dudhsagar Falls can be translated to mean The Sea of Milk. When you see the water rushing over the falls and crashing to the next level below, you will see how appropriate the name actually is. The falls are able to froth up into a white mist and they are filled with roiling activity no matter when you decide to visit. On and on they go, providing a spectacular display for everyone who remembers to take their camera.

However while the falls occur all year round, it is the monsoon season in India that really rewards those who choose this time to see them. The vast increase in water at this time means the falls become more dramatic and much heavier, sending countless gallons of water over the falls and into the depths below. To give you an idea of how tall these waterfalls are, they soar to over three hundred metres in height. You can imagine the noise as the water rushes over the top and continues its journey to the foot of the falls below.

If you are ever in Goa for a holiday make sure you have the time to see the Dudhsagar Falls. Monsoon season will give the best display, but any time of year enables you to share in this wonderful natural phenomena.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

The Delights of Margao

On the western side of India and Goa there is a city – a bustling and hugely busy city called Margao. Since it is so busy you might reasonably wonder whether it would be a good idea to actually go there at all. But Margao holds some true delights and there is plenty in the city to fascinate every tourist who sets foot there.

There are many sights worth seeing in the city, one of which is the City Hall. It may not sound like the most appealing place to visit, but if you see it at night you will notice it is lit up with different coloured lights. It certainly looks a lot more attractive than many other City Halls you may have seen.

Elsewhere in Margao you can see beaches – yes, you’ve got that right, there are plenty of beaches very close by to where Margao has sprawled out over the years. Some people actually stay in Margao because of its proximity to lots of the beaches in the area, as it can provide you with the best of both worlds in many respects.

Whenever you go exploring in Margao, remember it will be hot. The stuffy nature of the city can be combated by stopping regularly, drinking plenty and taking advantage of the many places you can stop for a snack too. Sometimes the best activity of all is just to sit and watch people as they go about their daily lives. It can be quite a fascinating experience.

Don’t miss out on seeing the Holy Spirit Church either if you want to see what could possibly be one of the whitest buildings in the world. The impressive facade is quite stunning, especially against a deep blue sky.

Many of the buildings in Margao are just as stunning, if in different ways. Watch out for the House of Seven Gables; you might need a map to help you find it though as four of the gables are no longer there. However it is another symbol of how diverse and fascinating this part of Goa really is.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Looking For Spa Resorts In Goa

Beach holidays are superb for relaxing and getting a well earned dose of sunshine. But why not go one step further and consider a spa holiday in Goa instead?

Spa holidays in general are becoming a popular area to explore for many people. They can be enormously relaxing and far better than simply staying in regular accommodation. Just imagine being able to spend a day at the beach before going back to your accommodation to enjoy a nice relaxing massage. This is the kind of experience you can expect from a spa break, and Goa has lots to offer in this regard.

You only have to start looking at the range of options available in Goa by searching for spa holidays in Goa on the internet. There are lots of different venues on offer, many of them ranking in the four and five star area too. This means you can treat yourself to a superb Goa holiday that really will help you to unwind and relax the whole time you are there.

The good news is that lots of Goa’s spas have chosen their location very carefully indeed. They want to ensure you have the best of all worlds while you are there, so you will end up being able to wander out to the beach nearby and perhaps even enjoy a nice view from your hotel window.

Always be sure to check out the facilities in any potential spa hotels you want to book before you do so. This will enable you to figure out which one is best for you, as well as seeing where it is located. Don’t forget you won’t want to use the spa all the time; you’ll want to explore the local area in your part of Goa as well. Making sure you have plenty of options to choose from is all part of giving you a potentially superb holiday in Goa.

So which hotel will suit you? A spa break may not be the cheapest way to see Goa, but it certainly packs a punch you’ll never forget.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Fancy Visiting A Bird Sanctuary In Goa?

Goa is chock full of plenty of amazing experiences. One of the most notable of these is the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, which is a constantly popular place to go in Goa. Will it be worth visiting for you too?

It is located on the Mandovi River on Chorao Island, and as you will see when you arrive it has packed a lot into the space it has available. Be prepared to be amazed by the sights and sounds of this bird sanctuary; it probably won’t take you long to realise just how beneficial it is to visit this place.

As you might guess, the name Dr Salim Ali refers to an ornithologist who was famous in India. He died back in 1987 but even now he is still referred to as the Birdman of India.

The sanctuary is home to a wide ranging selection of mangrove forests. There are literally hundreds of birds here and there is certainly much to learn about them. It is well worth bearing in mind however that you cannot just turn up at the bird sanctuary. You must have prior permission to visit. This can be obtained from the Chief Wildlife Warden who works in the Forest Department of Panaji.

Once you are there though you will indeed see that the visit is worth the effort. The main time for visiting in order to see the best of what it has to offer is from October until around the following March. This means the monsoons will be over and the migratory birds will be out in force.

Dr Salim Ali would no doubt be proud of this sanctuary as it essentially carries on his work and does so in his memory. Goa is a stunning place to visit in terms of the wildlife that is there, and this is something that surprises some people about Goa. It’s not the first thing you would think of when it comes to this holiday destination. But as you can see there is certainly a lot to discover here, and if you can get into this sanctuary you will be glad you made the effort to do so.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

How Much Would You Buy?

If you have ever wandered around a flea market before you will know how tempting they can be. With stalls piled high with all kinds of goods you can be sure you won’t leave without being tempted by something.

And you can have this very experience when you visit Goa. There is a flea market which is very well known and is called the Anjuna Flea Market. If you are anywhere nearby you should definitely make the time to go and take a look.

The market takes place on a Wednesday so be sure to plan your holiday carefully around this day of the week. The good news is that you don’t just have the flea market to look forward to here – you also have a huge beach to explore and relax on once you are all shopped out!

The market itself has been going since the Sixties, and it has grown into a focal point for the area. You won’t have to ask for directions to reach it on the right day – it is quite sizeable and fairly easy to spot. The great thing about the market is that it is infused with Indian promise in every area. The goods are made in India and this is definitely a great place to come for all those authentic Indian souvenirs you will want to take home with you.

It can be a good idea to simply wander around the stalls first of all, taking note of what you see and what types of goods are available. You can then go back and actually buy the selected items you like the most. Be prepared to carry a lot – there are some truly delightful objects for sale here and you might spend more than you think. Bring a bag with you to pop everything in as you buy it.

You can spend the entire day browsing if you wish as it opens at around nine in the morning and stays there until the sun finally goes down. This is undoubtedly one of the best venues in Goa for those who love shopping.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Mapsa Or Mapusa?

Regardless of where you think you might be going, both places are actually the same. You will see Mapusa on a map but the locals always call it Mapsa, so be warned if you ask for directions to watch out for this.

But what about the town itself – is it worth a visit if you are in Goa on holiday?

Well the answer has to be yes because it offers a lot to see and do. This is sightseeing at its best because you can see the locals going about their daily business. Don’t expect a huge town because you will be disappointed – it might be the third biggest that Goa has to offer but that doesn’t mean it is huge.

You shouldn’t expect a thriving town either because it isn’t focused on the tourist trade like some other places are. In fact it could be said to be rather on the quiet side for most of the week.

But don’t let this put you off. In fact if you want to see more of Mapusa – or Mapsa if you want to fit in a little more – head there on a Friday and get involved with the market. This is a great event that takes place on a weekly basis, and you can buy all kinds of delicacies here along with tasty morsels of all kinds that Goa is particularly known for.

There are also other items you can buy here though, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to wander around all the stalls. You can get some real bargains here no matter what you might like to buy. If you are after some authentic souvenirs of Goa to take back home with you, you’ll certainly be in luck.

The great thing about the market stalls is that they are far from being neat and tidy. Look down at the floor as you wander along as well, because you’ll see plenty of wares spread out all over the place. Why not check them out and buy as much as you can while you are there? Mapusa certainly has plenty to offer in every sense of the term.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

A Water Park In Goa?

It somehow doesn’t sound too likely, and in fact this water park hasn’t been around for too long all told. But the Blue Whale Water Park is definitely there to be visited, so let’s see what else we can find out about it.

For starters it is important to recognise this is the only water park you have at your disposal in Goa. So if you want to grab a ride or two in the water park this is your only option.

You’ll find the Blue Whale Water Park on the western side of Goa, ironically not too far from the sea. Vagator Beach is a short distance north of the park while Baga Beach is even closer but to the south. The water park is slightly inland, and you’ll find it next to the Royal Goan Beach Club.

The park itself looks to be built on a hill, which seems unlikely for a water park. But in actual fact it adds a certain attraction to it because you will see it is built in tiers. So if you are at the top you can see right down to the foot of the park to see where the various slides and rides go to.

There are no fewer than four pools here to swim in, which makes it a delightful place to go. Make no mistake the Blue Whale Water Park is nowhere near as big as some of the other parks you will find in various locations around the world. But when it is the only one available you will certainly want to make the best of it.

You can also find lots of areas to relax in when you aren’t splashing around in the water or trying out one of the slides. This is good news if you want to relax and take in the sun as well as having some fun. The place is perhaps best for children to enjoy, as there are slides and pools to dip into for the whole day. And you don’t have to pay for the under twos to get in either, which will certainly save you money.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Paliem Lake – A Must See Destination In Goa

You only need to see one picture of Paliem Lake in Goa to actually want to go there. And if you are planning on taking a trip out to Goa in the near future, what better opportunity could there be to do just that?

This lake also has its own beach, which is beautifully sandy and welcoming. It also has a stunning view of the lake beyond it. If you look across from the beach you will also see plenty of lush green vegetation and trees, stretching away from you and virtually begging you to follow and explore. But you will want to stay on the beach itself to appreciate the quiet and the beauty of Paliem Lake.

The lake itself is a freshwater lake, and some people who are in the nearby area do not even know this beach and lake are there. You may catch a glimpse of the lake itself from a distance away, but you will not see the beach unless you are fairly close to the area.

Many people go swimming in the lake and with such incredible surroundings hugging you as you enjoy them, it is no wonder they do. This has to be one of the world’s loveliest places to take a dip, and with a nice pleasant beach to relax on afterwards you will certainly want to make the most of it. It will feel a little strange to open your eyes when sunbathing to realise that you are not lying by the sea though!

You can also see the village of Paliem nearby if you can drag yourself away from the lake and the beach for long enough. Wadhcolomb Hill towers above this little oasis inland from the sea, and it is no surprise that you may find yourself without crowds to worry about while you are there. Some people come back day after day to experience this little slice of paradise, but however many times you revisit Paliem Lake and beach you will be glad you at least saw it once. Why deny yourself the opportunity to see such a beauty?
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Exploring Panaji – The Capital Of Goa

Wherever you head to for your holidays, it is good to visit the capital of that country if you can. It tells you a lot about what the country is like in a way that visiting out of town areas does not. And if you happen to be going on a beach based holiday, a visit to the capital city can give you a break from sunning yourself for a day too.

In the case of Goa the capital you need to head for is Panaji. The meaning of the word Panaji is ‘land that never floods’. The city is well spread out and is dotted with hotels and other forms of accommodation right across its mass. Panaji is located on the Mandovi River, so you can expect some nice views across this and indeed some wonderfully attractive buildings to look at as well.

Many people actually stay in Panaji when they come to Goa on holiday. It certainly has plenty to offer for those looking for a more vibrant and lively holiday than a beach based trip abroad. There is a beach here though if you should come to miss them – try the Miramar Beach for size, which is just three kilometres away from the main city centre itself.

One of the main sights that people come here to see is Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, which was first opened in around 1540. With a history stretching back over four hundred and fifty years, this incredible white building can be reached by climbing the steps in front of it. Its lofty position makes it look even more impressive than it is anyway.

Even though Panaji is the capital of Goa it is not particularly dynamic, hurried or fast moving. This makes it something of a delight for tourists who want to see what it has to offer without being carried along in the city crowds. If you are visiting Goa, or you are looking for somewhere different to stay, consider using Panaji as the hub for your holiday. With the Miramar Beach not far away, you can really have the best of both worlds.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

An Experience Worth Having In Northern Goa

All of Goa has some sensational experiences and attractions to show you. But in northern Goa you will find the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, and if you decide to visit there (any day but a Thursday) you will be delighted and enchanted by an experience many tourists opt for during their stay.

The sanctuary itself is located in Usgao, and it boasts many different animals worth seeing. It is also not far to the north west of the Mollem National Park, which also provides plenty to enjoy on a day out. It is the earlier and later months of the year that offer the best opportunity to see something new here. For example if you travel to Goa later in the year you should visit between October and December to see the best of the sanctuary. The first three months of the year are equally as good in this respect, so if you want to visit you should plan your holiday accordingly.

You will see many mammals and reptiles during your visit to the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary – some of which you may have seen before. But you will also have the chance to see some more unusual specimens that may be new to you. How about the barking deer for example? Or perhaps the Malabar giant squirrels are worth watching out for? One thing is for certain – you will definitely be educated in ways you never imagined by seeing what goes on in the sanctuary. This is a haven for many animals that may not have had a good life elsewhere.

You can also look forward to experiencing what is essentially an eco-system all of its own in the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. There are many experiences to be had here, and you will definitely want to add this destination to your list of things to do should you end up going to Goa on a family holiday.

Make no mistake though; you may struggle to cover the whole area in a day. Since it covers around eight square kilometres it will soon become apparent that a two day visit will show you much more than one day ever could.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Why Visit Vagator Beach?

Many seaside destinations have their preferred beaches, and Goa is no exception to this. If you research what people think of the beaches in Goa, you’ll find one name cropping up over and over again. That name is Vagator Beach.

So what makes Vagator Beach worth visiting?

For starters it is not the kind of area which caters heavily to tourists. You will be well looked after here, for sure, but you shouldn’t expect purpose built shopping centres and other such built up offerings. But that is one of the reasons why Vagator Beach is so popular.

It also has a particular sight that may make you look twice when you head down to the beach. This rocky area has a face waiting to greet you, a face by the water’s edge which seems smiling and peaceful. No one seems to know who carved the face out of the rock which sits there, but it certainly provides a good talking point and many a tourist has taken a photo of it to take back home with them.

While the beach does have rocky areas don’t let this put you off paying a visit. It also has plenty of sandy stretches to lie back and relax on, making it a wonderful beach to visit for a lazy day in Goa. There is also a shack nearby that serves food and drink throughout the day, so when lunch time arrives you won’t have to travel far for a bite to eat. And there is certainly no better place to tuck into your choice of replenishment than on Vagator Beach itself.

You will actually see when you arrive that the beach is split into two main sections. One is bigger than the other and this is why it is now known as Big Vagator Beach and Little Vagator Beach. Common sense will tell you which is which! But they both have something to offer the eager tourist, so be sure you take a closer look at both of them during your holiday in Goa.

As beaches go, Vagator Beach is one of the best ones you could choose.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Intriguing Sights Of Old Goa

Every city has stories to tell. Old Goa is no exception – and its stories date back to the 15th century, so there is plenty of insight and information here if you care to explore some more.

The first thing you will notice is the plethora of churches here. They are deemed so important and notable that they led to the city being granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1986. The city used to be deemed the capital while the Portuguese were here, but after it was hit by the plague it was finally given up in the mid 1800s.

You can see the Church of St Francis of Assisi, the Church of Our Lady of the Mount and the Church of St Peter as well, not to mention many others. The Viceroy Arch is also well worth seeing, as it is more than four hundred years old. Just imagine the countless people who have passed beneath it since it was built. This memorial to Vasco da Gama, a 15th century Portuguese explorer, harks from a time when Old Goa was far different to how it is today.

Strangely enough though, the name ‘Old Goa’ only dates back to the mid 20th century. It is appropriate enough though, since the area is largely a testament to times that are long since gone. It is a popular place for all the tourists to the area to visit though, so it can get busy during certain times of the year.

Some of the churches are allegedly haunted, but that probably encourages more visitors rather than sending them scurrying in the opposite direction! There doesn’t seem to be a lot of information about them from any source, so you may need to gather up your courage to see whether the rumours are true.

In any event, Old Goa makes an eerie and fascinating way to look back into the past. No visit to Goa should be completed without seeing the many churches and other religious buildings and ruins that make up this part of India. See it for yourself and you’ll be captivated.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Can You Sunbathe In Goa?

Indeed you can, and while India might not be the first country that comes to mind for a beach holiday, Goa has got some impressive beaches ready and waiting for you.

Some would go as far as describing this coastal part of India as ‘paradise’, and they would be right. Goa is stunning and it numbers beaches into double figures. So if you try one and it’s not what you’re after, there is another one not far away that you can visit the following day.

Candolim Beach is great for people who love the sun and can’t get enough of it. There’s not much shade to be had here, so be prepared to get yourself an umbrella when you arrive.

While the sun seekers will be happy with whatever beach they find themselves on in Goa, some are quieter than others. You’ll want miles of sand and plenty of room to play if you’re heading out to Goa with the whole family. But let’s suppose you’re on a romantic break with your partner. You won’t want so many interruptions if that’s the case.

And as such you should make a beeline for Baga Beach. It’s smaller, but it is still perfectly formed and it’s got everything you could want except for the crowds. You’ll still see families and it’s not so quiet that you’ll be the only ones there, but it’s a little more laid back here.

Some beaches have more to cater to tourists than others, and by far the best of the lot in this sense is Calangute Beach. Be prepared for crowds if you go at the height of the season, but if it gets a bit much you can actually stroll down the beach and reach Baga Beach instead. It’s a handy tip you might end up taking advantage of!

So you’re spoilt for choice in Goa when it comes to beaches. There’s something here to appeal to everyone, no matter where you fall on the spectrum. From deserted beaches with little to no facilities to ones which have everything and more besides, a beach holiday in Goa is what you want it to be – and more.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Goa, Rajasthan Hot Destinations for Weddings in India

17 June 2007

The Hindu style wedding of Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar in Rajasthan has made it a hot destination for palace weddings for rich Indians and foreigners. But there is another state that is increasingly trying to project itself as an alternative for the rich and glamorous who want to tie the knot.

Goa, in western India, is offering its beaches and landscapes as a place to tie the knot.

Over the last three decades, Goa has been drawing foreign tourists in the thousands from Europe with its beautiful beaches. In the last few years, tourists who want to get married and those looking for cheap and reliable medical treatment have also been attracted to the state. Goa is also a hotbed for glamorous, high profile rich Indians and non-resident Indians to solemnize their marriage.

Goa is a rich mix of Western culture and traditional Hindu values. Portuguese style houses and churches give an extra dimension to this former Portuguese colony, which gained its independence in 1961 -- not to mention the Hindu temples. The natural beauty of its 105-kilometer coastline adds to its glamour.

Many a romantic union's first steps toward the aisle take place with the sun going down on the beach. Many people prefer to take the important step into holy matrimony with the waves of the sea lashing the shore and palm trees swinging in celebration.

And with the rich and famous making a beeline to get married in Goa, it has stirred up business options for a few Goans. Getting married in Goa and making all the arrangements have sent the various players into a spin.

One such glamour couple to solemnize their wedding in Goa in April was Nirvana Chaudhary and Swasti Mittal. Nirvana is the son of business tycoon Binod Chaudhary and the heir to a multimillion-dollar business empire with diverse interests all over the world. Swasti is the daughter of Ashok Mittal -- the first cousin of L. N. Mittal, the richest Indian in the world.

The wedding needs and demands of the people getting married differ. Some prefer the unusual - an element of surprise to the guests and some want to plan it in a unique way.

An Indian Hindu wedding is a three-day affair - the cost of which hovers in the region between 600,000 to 1,000,000 rupees.

A Goan wedding would cost 200,000 to 400,000 rupees, says Stan Matins, a wedding planner from south Goa who has been in the wedding business for the least eight years.

Getting a mahout for the bride and bridegroom to come to the wedding reception hall or take a stroll on the beach after the church ceremony, dropping flower petals from a helicopter and hiring a bullock cart are some of the unusual things wedding planners have made arrangements for.

"I got an elephant for an Indian Hindu style wedding at the Marriott hotel in Goa's state capital Panjim, for a British couple and arranged for a helicopter to drop leaflets for another," recollects Lester Melo a wedding planner from north Goa.

South African Sherwaan Sims and British Elizabeth Bowers got married in a quieter and less expensive way. Sims and Bowers solemnized their wedding in a makeshift church at Palolem beach in south Goa and then took the journey to their hotel by bullock cart. Theirs was a relatively cheap wedding.

But not all weddings are low-key affairs. Most of the weddings are not just confined to the married couple and their small group of friends but to an entourage of their friend's relatives. And with Goa having its share of casinos, the guests have their share of fun off the beach too.

Melo recalls that he booked 230 rooms at the Park Hyatt for an Indian couple who got married and booked the casino for the night as well as a triple-decker cruise Paradise boat for non-gamblers.

The lavish spending on Indian marriages has stirred a few states in their bid to cash-in on the marriage fervor. They are keen to offer a smooth ride for Indians and foreigners to get married.

Goa is increasingly vying with Rajasthan in the marriage market to attract customers.

On offer in Rajasthan are the scores of palaces dotting the state's vast landscape. The publicity that Rajasthan has got for royal weddings, will help them earn more revenue.

Ancient palaces, heritage hotels, colorful traditions and the "shahi" costumes are the main attractions offered by Rajasthan for the tourist wanting to get married. Besides camels, elephants and ethnic jewelries, Rajasthan has other attractions on offer.

"It's a big segment and we are now exploring the idea on a larger scale," says Satyen Nagwekar, marketing manager, Goa Tourism.

"We have been noticing the trend for some time now. There are a number of people from Gujarat and Bengal coming to Goa to get married on the beaches," adds Nagwekar.

Until then the two states will vie with each other and with other smaller players to carve their slice of the wedding tourism pie.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Goa Carnival

11 June 2007

The Goa Carnival is an integral part of the Portuguese heritage of the state, which was a dominion of Portugal till 1961. The carnival epitomizes the fun-loving culture that is characteristic of Goa. It was introduced by the erstwhile rulers as a rowdy celebration in which flour, eggs, oranges, lemons, mud, sand-filled gloves along with dirty water, various liquids and glue were aimed at passersby.

Used pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils were also thrown out of windows. Perhaps this was done to discard the old and the dirty before the Lenten fast.

Fierce battles were waged in the streets, with plaster-of-Paris eggs, wax lemons, corncobs and beans. Blows were dealt out liberally, with brooms and wooden spoons. It was also an occasion for unchecked eating. People gorged on rich food at lavish feasts, and convents distributed cakes and pastries.

Though celebrated for only three days, the preparations for the festival would take many days, and build up to a frenetic pitch by the eve of the carnival. The carnival in Goa still retains the core of the original. A King of Chaos is elected, called King "Momo". He presides over the three-day festivities, which attract visitors from all over India and abroad.

A Musical Extravaganza

Street Plays, songs, dances, and unrehearsed farces mocking the establishment are performed before an enthusiastic, responsive audience. Floats depicting popular lullabies and nursery rhymes make a whimsical and colorful sight on the streets. In the three days of celebrations, cultural functions and competitions abound, and are judged by specially selected people. King Momo distributes the prizes to the winners.

The contestants wear colorful costumes and elaborate masks. Amidst the outrageous dresses seen on the street are some made of sheer, transparent polythene. In the fun-filled ambience, people smear color on each other, instead of the flour, eggs, fruit and water that used to be used in earlier times.

Everyone's Invited

In Goan villages, however, the festivities have a more indigenous flavor. Though celebrated by the Christian population of Goa, the carnival's only relevance to Christianity is that it is celebrated before Lent. The festival today has no religious undertones and has come to be a cultural highlight of the state, rather than of the religion.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Goa Hotel Projects Beached

The progressive development in Goa is in danger of derailment with the brakes applied on the controversial Goa Regional Plan 2011, stalling 13 hotel projects, primarily mixed-use developments and luxury retreats, covering approximately 1500 hectares of land located in the southern and northern tip of the picturesque state.

Informed sources revealed that leading international hotel brands are caught in this developmental quagmire. This is another blow to the state which has quite a few hotel projects caught in legalities due to flouting of developmental laws.

The regional plan will see development of Goa's 7.5 crore square metre area, primarily the tourism magnets - the green belts and coastal stretches, including restricted and protected areas, where most of the hotel projects are slated to come up.

Voicing the concerns of the industry, Ralph de Souza, chairman, tourism committee, Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and group chairman, de Souza Group, said, "The chamber has taken a stand that development cannot be at the cost of the environment. The regional plan should be a guideline and not a law, and it cannot supersede existing laws laid down for protecting the environment and regulating development."

He expressed concern over the stalled projects, saying that the players involved would be necessarily affected. He pointed out that though the maximum impact would be in the interiors, a trickle down effect would trigger the collapse of tourism in the long term. However, he admitted that "the state needs a plan for its progress and for driving economic growth, while preserving its natural beauty."

The popular tourist destination is facing an infrastructure problem and while it still grapples with unregulated development, lack of enforcement of the existing laws, de Souza says, is by far the biggest problem.

Tourism continues to be a top draw to this state and main contributor to its economy, with Goa attracting nearly 20 lakh domestic tourists and 3.4 lakh foreign tourists in 2005-06. Pankaj Mathur, GM, Cidade De Goa, giving further insight said, "The regional plan has to be balanced and a think tank should be constituted.

We need to draw a line to development, but at the same time we can't turn our back to it. It is with this the state has achieved prosperity, else it would have been a dead destination."
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Luxury Liner Launches Cruise off Goa

Indian Ocean Cruises, the Indian arm of London-based Foresight Group, along with its Indian representative STIC Travel Group, Saturday launched its cruise off the Goa port for a 14-night round trip.

The cruise, Ocean Odyssey, will travel from Goa touching major trading ports like Mangalore, Kochi, Tuticorin and the islands of Suheli, Thinnakkara and Cheriyam in Lakshadweep and Colombo tracing the ancient spice route.

'The launch is an initiative to provide the Indian and international travellers with a unique experience of cruising along the ancient routes of the Malabar Coast and experiencing the beauty of the pristine atolls of Lakshadweep Islands,' STIC Travel Group chairman Subhash Goyal said in a statement.

The luxury liner will also be offered in the 3-night, 5-night, 6-night, 8-night and 14-night cruise segments for the same route.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Great Expectations for Indian Hotels

India's hospitality industry is set for dramatic growth in the next couple of years. There is a serious shortage of hotel rooms, and demand far outstrips supply. Hotel room rates are going through the roof, especially in the cities. But with the industry showing very bright prospects, investment in the sector is witnessing a sudden spurt.

For decades, India was a paradise for backpackers on a shoestring budget or "nirvana seekers" eager to escape the rat race in Western societies. Much has changed since economic liberalization and the software boom. While curious backpackers keen to discover India continue to pour in, it is business travelers who constitute the bulk of visitors to the country in recent years. There are medical tourists, too - those who come to India for inexpensive but top-class medical treatment. A booming economy, growing affluence and cheap domestic flights have induced many Indians to travel as well.

But there aren't enough rooms in hotels to accommodate them all.
The scarcity of hotel accommodation is obvious from the fact that while all of India has about 110,000 hotel rooms (about the same as metropolitan New York), Shanghai alone has some 130,000 rooms. And only a quarter of India's 110,000 rooms are in the branded segment.

"India needs another 125,000 hotel rooms at least by 2010 to meet the surging demand, particularly in the upper and middle ranges," an official in the Ministry of Tourism told Asia Times Online.

"The demand for rooms has grown across the country. In towns like Agra, Goa and Khajuraho it is tourists - domestic and foreign - [who] are driving the demand. But it is business travelLers [who] are pushing up demand for hotel rooms in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore," said.

Bangalore accounts for the bulk of foreign business travelers visiting India annually - 51% compared with 35% who go to Mumbai and 26% to Delhi. Ninety percent of the hotel clientele in Bangalore consists of foreign business travelers. The city's booming information technology (IT) sector is fueling the soaring demand for hotel rooms here.

For more information visit Asia Times
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Tourism Impacting Goa's Environment

Goa's unbridled tourism is having an adverse impact on the state's environment and society, says a study sponsored by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Undertaken by the Goa Institute of Management in Panaji, the study says the large-scale growth of tourism is leading to increased pressure "on both society and the environment".

"Preserving the national heritage and reducing environmental degradation have become crucial issues for concern. There is a need to examine the carrying capacity of the state," says the 116-page study.

The research analyses Goa's agriculture, mining, growing pharma sector, small and medium enterprise (SME) sector and controversial plans for promoting special economic zones (SEZs).

It notes that Goa's economy is "confronted" by a solid waste management problem and that it desperately needs an efficient public transport system.

"Enough effort has not been made to ensure proper solid waste management. Again, absence of efficient public transport has increased the growth of motorbikes and cars substantially. This in turn has aggravated environmental pollution."

It also points to the migration of unskilled labour from neighbouring states "on account of the non-availability of unskilled workers" in Goa.

Other issues it emphasises include disputes over land use between small entrepreneurs and large corporates, dependence on other states for agricultural produce consumed in Goa, failure to ensure uninterrupted power and the need for improving the quality and quantity of water supply.

The research says that a "strong positive co-relation" does not seem to exist between tourism growth and employment of locals, especially in the hotel industry. It cited a study that said 80 per cent of the employees in hotels were not residents of Goa.

"This can be partly on account of high wage rates prevailing in Goa as compared to other under-developed states and therefore managers prefer to hire workers from other states," says the study.

It highlights that private transport in Goa is highly expensive "in the absence of adequate public transport" and taxi operators were working in "monopoly power".

"Growth of tourism might have also adversely affected the poor and downtrodden, especially during peak season when prices usually go up. A proper assessment needs to be done," the study states.

It blames the tourism sector for becoming a "breeding ground of touts and commission agents", which hikes up hotel tariffs and transport costs. There is also an absence of a proper regulatory mechanism to check the price rise.

"Wide disparity in prices charged during the peak and off-peak season for various services and between the private and public authority needs to be examined. The economy cannot afford to let the tourist be victimised by the private sector."

The study notes that Goa lacks budget hotels. Goa's tourism department provides "around 600 beds per day at an affordable price" but this is insufficient, especially during peak season.

It also points a finger at the state government, which it says has played a limited role in promoting tourism.

According to the researchers, the government has not participated actively in promoting tourism apart from officially representing the state at a few fairs abroad.

For more information visit India News
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Indian Medical Tourism Booming, as Scottish Patients Flock In

Comparatively less cost and better quality of treatment plus nil waiting time are attracting Scottish patients to get them cured in Indian hospitals.

Medical tourism is booming in India, with Scottish patients flocking towards Indian hospitals. The two most prominent reasons why they find India the most suitable destination for various treatments include relatively low cost, and extremely low waiting time. Highly effective treatment offered in Indian hospitals and an opportunity to enjoy an exotic vacation at popular tourist destinations of India like Delhi, Kerala, Goa, Mumbai, and Bangalore to name a few are the other significant reasons behind this.

According to NHS (National Health Service), some travel groups in Scotland have started to prepare health tour packages for the patients willing to travel to India for treatment. Globe Health Tours, which has been providing amusement for stag weekends, has already dispatched 30 patients to Indian hospitals, where they’ll have to pay only a fraction of price charged by the UK clinics.

NHS’ waiting list for a few procedures is still above 6-months and private clinics in the country (Scotland) charge patients nearly 10,000 pounds for treatments such as knee or hip replacements. However, those ready to go to India can have the same operations done for below 3500 pounds.

As per a Research Analyst’s view at RNCOS, who has recently researched a report on “Opportunities in Medical Tourism in India (2007)”, “People are turning towards India as they’re fed up with NHS’ waiting list. Their aim is to save money, and also have a holiday at one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world.”

This research reports on “Opportunities in Medical Tourism in India (2007)”, also addresses some interesting issues for today’s Global business environment.

-Get an insight into the trends in market performance.

- Pinpoint sectors of growth and identify the driving factors.

- Identify market, brand leaders, and understand the competitive environment.

- Opportunities that exist for the Medical Tourism Industry.

- Key Challenges and Strategies.

About the report

RNCOS’ report “Opportunities in Medical Tourism in India (2007)” provides extensive research and objective analysis on the Medical Tourism industry in India. They will pick up momentum in the days to come and culminate into the New Year celebrations passing through Goa Liberation Day and Christmas festivities," Ralf D'souza, Chairman, Travel and Tours Organisation of Goa (TTAG), told PTI.

The western State will celebrate Liberation Day on December 19 when it was freed from the clutches of Portuguese after 450 years.

"The hotel occupancy is hundred per cent. There are hardly any rooms available right now," Dsouza stated.

The tourism experts feel that from December 23 onwards, more than one lakh tourists would be in Goa at any given time, mostly on the beaches, partying.

Encashing on the tourists' flood, the hotels are designing various parties to suit every pocket and taste of entertainment.

"We are having one of the longest seasons starting from December 23. It will culminate in the New Year. We will be having UK's DJ Ricky Divine, DJ Akbar Sami, DJ Aqueel and others putting the floor on fire," stated Abhishekh Nath, president, La Calypso group of hotels, who is busy finalising the guest list.

During this time of the season, any party in Goa is crowded with a gathering of not less than 5,000 people. Expensive tickets are not an hindrance for the party revellers, who won't mind shelling extra to rock to the music and gulp down pegs of liquor which comes free with the ticket.

"It's best time to be in Goa. Everyone comes here to enjoy," said Poonam Bijlani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Emgee Corporation (Hospitality Division), which is hosting a mega-event `Goa Vibes 2006' in the heart of Panaji city on New Year eve.

Bijlani's event will have celebrities like Pooja Bedi, Yana Gupta, Rohit Roy and others including DJ Ryan Beck performing. "We will keep people dancing throughout night," she said.

With traditional Christmas celebrations round the corner, many celebrities too find their way to Goa. Security concerns do not seem to dampen the spirits as hotels have not registered any cancellations.

"It's fantastic place to be during New Year. Each hotel is trying to outdo another by offering better parties and offers," said Pooja Bedi, a model, who will be performing in Goa for New Year.

Different hotels have already decked up their lobbies with the Christmas trees and pastry shops flooded with different types of cakes.

"We have spoken to the intelligence agencies. They say that the security alert is general in nature. Everything is normal. Tourists need not get scary," stated Ralf D'souza, TTAG, Chairman.

Panaji, trying to get over the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) hang over, is yet to wear Christmas gears though shops are lined up with the Christmas father merchandises and other items.

The ten-day IFFI culminated on December 3.

The streets would be illuminated on Liberation Day eve and would continue lit up till New Year.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Himachal Fruit Wines to be Tourist Attraction in Goa

Shri C.R.B. This is a first for the Bureau and The Centre.

The campaign consists of more than 300, 30 second TV spots on BBC World running over a four week period. It will be seen by close to 1 million key corporate decision makers. A mere three-and-a-half-hour flight from Chennai, Bangkok promises value for money.

Besides its famous nightlife, Bangkok has newer attractions, including an animal safari and the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden and Resort at Pattaya.

Tourists who land at the newly commissioned Suvarnabhumi Airport at Bangkok, located 25 km east of Bangkok and built at a cost of 155 million baht, get their visas on arrival.

Four flights are operated everyday by Indian (formerly Indian Airlines) from Chennai, besides Thai Airways, under a code-share arrangement with Air India.

For Indian tourists of all ages, the 600-acre Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden provides an interesting experience as visitors can pose for pictures with live cheetahs, tigers and birds. 'It is an ecstatic feeling to hug a tiger or a cheetah, as these endangered animals are tranquilised and freely mingle with the visitors at the Garden,' says T.C. Gopalan, a Chennai-based financial consultant and frequent visitor to Bangkok. Apart from the coral island on the Pattaya beach, the two-hour Tiffany Show is a must-see for tourists.

Other attractions include an elephant show, and a children's zoo keeps tourists spellbound in the backdrop of a visual treat of orchids, landscaped flower garden and a cultural show.

For more information visit The Hindu
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Booming Tourism Helps to Reshape Asian Economies

13 November 2006

'Discover' Hong Kong, journey through 'Incredible India' or head off to 'Malaysia, Truly Asia.' Such advertising slogans should come as no surprise - tourism is gaining in importance in Asia and helping to reshape regional economies more towards services and away from a traditional reliance on manufacturing and exports.

With consumer wealth on the rise, particularly in India and China, which have more than 2 billion people between them, more Asians are travelling in the region.

The rise of tourism is already encouraging some governments to shift their economies more towards services, but the trend is a long-term one, analysts say.

'In the past 20 years in Asia the focus has been on industry, maybe in the next 20 years the focus will be on services,' said Sebastien Barbe, senior economist, Asia at investment bank Calyon.

Southeast Asia travel and tourism should generate almost 236 billion dollars in economic activity this year, more than the output of Hong Kong's economy, growing in nominal terms to about 522 billion dollars by 2016, the World Travel and Tourism Council says.

It estimates that tourism in Northeast Asia - China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Macau - will generate more than 1 trillion dollars of economic activity in 2006, a figure that is expected to more than double in 10 years.

According to MasterCard International, the number of people earning 5,000 dollars or more a year in Asia is poised to rise sharply, increasing the number of potential travellers.

It says people earning less than 5,000 dollars a year do not tend to travel abroad. China should have 293 million people earning 5,000 dollars or more in 2014 versus about 119 million in 2004, while India's total is set to more than double to 102.5 million.

'We define 'middle class' as households that have significant discretionary consumption power (hence the 5,000 dollar income threshold), and they will be about 650 million in size by 2014 in Asia, with close to 300 million in China alone,' said MasterCard's Asia Pacific economic advisor, Yuwa Hedrick-Wong.'

They will certainly push up the growth of the service sector.

'Domestic tourists are also boosting tourism. Better roads, discount airlines and increasing car ownership have encouraged more Indians to travel in the last few years.

India's hotel industry is expected to grow robustly for the next three to four years as demand outpaces supply.

Suraj Arora, a 30-year-old Indian, based in Guangzhou, China, has just returned home to Punjab in northern India to take his parents and younger sister on their first trip to the Taj Mahal.

'They have always wanted to see it, but this is their first chance,' Arora said. 'Every year now I try to come home for one month to visit and take them somewhere new.'

Arora says he earns up to 8,000 dollars a month exporting electronic gadgets back to India and plans to spend about 10% of that on the week-long trip for his family.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

SriLankan Airlines to Begin Flights From Colombo to Goa, India

November 02, 2006

Sri Lankan Airlines have unveiled twice weekly from Colombo to the coastal resort town of Goa, the airline's 50th global destination and its 10th in India.

The two hour flight will operate every Monday and Saturday and reflects the opportunities and continued growth for the region.

Regional Manager Australia for Sri Lankan Airlines, Ian Robinson stated: 'We have positioned ourselves as a link between India and the rest of the world, and we have been steadily expanding our presence there in the last few years. Over 70,000 Indian travellers boarded the cruise last year, averaging about 50-60 per cent occupancy.

According to Chong Chee Tut, COO, Star Cruises, the company hopes to better that to an average of 80 per cent this year. The ship that has 740 cabins and can accommodate 1,480 passengers will operate in its second year till May 2007.

Clearly, cruises are becoming a favourite means of holiday options for Indians. While Indians once travelled to Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries to experience the joy of cruises, things changed when well-known cruise companies started docking on Indian shores.

And while Star Cruises' SuperStar Libra (as we've already mentioned) started operations from Mumbai, there are other companies that are arriving along the western coastline of India (along the Arabian Sea).

That explains why international liners like Silversea, Costa Cruises, Queen Elizabeth-2 of Cunard Lines, Amsterdam of Holland-America, Oriana of P&O Cruises, Noble Cealedonia, Phoenix Reisen, Compagnie Cruises, Japan Cruise Lines, Crystal Cruises, Holiday Kreuzfahrten and Saga Shipping are showing keen interest to tap the Indian market.

Gautam Chadha, Silversea's representative in India, explains that four Silversea ships will pick up passengers from India in the months of December, February, March and April. The high-end cruise liner, Silversea has 300-400 rooms and the best pick is the Mumbai-Goa-Kochi-Phuket-Penang-Singapore cruise that is accessible to customers at 600-700 dollars per person, per night.

While Star Cruises has more one-night cruises by way of weekend getawaya from Mumbai this year, customers can also opt for a three-night cruise to Kadmat islands (Lakshadweep). Then there is an option for a two-night cruise from Mumbai to Goa too.

The 14-day cruise starts from Goa and follows the ancient spice routes of the Malabar Coast, calling at coastal trading ports and the untouched islands of Lakshadweep before the emerald gem of Sri Lanka.

It costs 3,857 dollars upwards for 14 nights, depending on your time of travel. One can also opt for Ocean Odyssey, a small four-star vessel for 250 passengers that has a swimming pool, Internet facilities, fitness centre, spa and jacuzzis, besides other attractions.

New liners that will launch themselves in India are also keen to cruise along the east coast (in the Bay of Bengal) during the period when the west coast is hit by the monsoons.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Accor Signs its First Resort in India

The Accor hotel group has signed its first resort property in India, the Sofitel Cabo de Rama in Goa, India. These temples have been witness to the harsh Portugal rule when diktats were passed to abolish all the temples. The deities were uprooted from place to place and even worshipped at homes during that period, until they were finally ensconced at their present abodes.

During your vacations in Goa, you will discover that Saraswat temples hold much significance among the people of Goa. This temple of Goa attracts not only the Hindu crowd but Christians too pour into these temples in good numbers. This may be due to the fact that though many of them have embraced Christianity, they still hold on to their pre-conversion surnames and still sponsor and support the deities of their Hindu brethren. Among the oldest Saraswat Temples in Goa are the Mangeshi temple of Priol in Goa, the Shanta Durga Temple at Kavele in Goa, the Ganapati temple at Khandole in Goa, the Maha Laxmi temple at Bandewade in Goa and the Sri Nagesh Maharudra Temple at Bandora in Goa.

Of these, unlike all other ancient deities of Goa, the Sri Nagesh Maharudra did not move from Bandora (Bandiwade) even during the period of the Portuguese acquisition. Atrunja Taluka in Goa is now called 'Ponda'. It is a land of valleys and mountains. An ideal abode for the Gods amid coconut and arecanut groves, Phonda is full of Hindu temples, the Sri Ganapati temple at Khandole village being one of the most prominent and oldest of them here.

For more information about India visit India at its Best
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Fly GoAir for Rs 975-2,700

Low-cost airline GoAir is offering 100,000 air tickets at rock-bottom prices (Rs 1,500-2,700, including taxes and surcharge), and 10,000 tickets at Rs 975, across select sectors for travel till March 31.

Rs 975
Bangalore-Delhi, Chennai-Mumbai, Delhi-Goa, Delhi-Pune, Goa-Mumbai, Mumbai-Hyderabad, Srinagar-Jammu

Rs 1,500
Ahmedabad-Mumbai

Rs 1,900
Mumbai-Srinagar, Mumbai-Delhi, Mumbai-Coimbatore, Mumbai-Cochin

Rs 2,700
Chennai-Pune, Chennai-Delhi
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Shopping in Goa

For travellers to Goa, the visit is not complete unless they take back a souvenir of their memorable sojourn in this magnificent paradise. Naturally, shopping should be a priority on the itinerary of every tourist, along with the sightseeing attractions.

The excellent local handicrafts of Goa are easily the most popular souvenir items and include brassware, terracotta, shell work, crochet, carved furniture, bamboo work, papier-mache, etc. These are available in the Government Emporia and also at shops and stalls near the popular tourist spots.

Another item which is on the list of every traveller to Goa is a pack of the famed cashew nuts. These are available practically everywhere. There are shops specialising in selling only cashewnuts. The nuts are available in a wide variety of tastes ranging from plain, salted and masala. The prices vary based on the quality and flavour.

There are also many fascinating options in the lifestyle and fashion shops which have come up in recent times. Some of these are located in fabulous old Goan houses which have been painstakingly restored. These shops make the best selections in home styling and fashion available to the tourists at quite reasonable prices.

It is also a fascinating experience to go around and shop in the traditional markets of the Goan towns and villages. These markets are a mirror of Goa's ethnic culture and provide a glimpse of the typical Goan way of doing business.

Two of the most famous such market areas are Mapusa and Anjuna. The Friday Market at Mapusa, where stalls sell everything from curios and old coins to dried fish and spices.
The Wednesday Market at Anjuna Beach started by and for foreigners is an extremely lively spot where souvenirs, beachwear, trinkets and handicrafts are sold at bargain prices.
Most deluxe hotels and resorts also have good in-house shops, but the price ranges are usually higher.

The charm of shopping in Goa lies in bargaining to your heart's content in markets and shops until you finally bring down the price and make the purchase a worthwhile experience.

For more information visit Goa Tourism
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Goa Set To Become Gambling Paradise

Goa is set to become a gambler's paradise. However, since the 1960s, the celebrations of the Shigmo and carnival have shifted to the urban centres, and in recent times these festivals are seen more as a means of attracting tourists. Celebrations for all festivals usually last for a few days and include parties and balls.

Western English songs have a large following in most parts of Goa. Traditional Konkani folk songs too have a sizable following. Manddo, the traditional Goan music which originated in the nineteenth century, is sung and danced on special occasions. Goa is also known for its Goa trance music.

Rice with fish curry is the staple diet in Goa. Goa is renowned for its rich variety of fish dishes cooked with elaborate recipes. Coconut and coconut oil is widely used in Goan cooking along with chili peppers, spices and vinegar giving the food a unique flavour. Pork dishes such as Vindaloo, Xacuti and Sorpotel are cooked for major occasions among the Catholics. A rich egg-based multi-layered sweet dish known as bebinca is a favourite at Christmas. The most popular alcoholic beverage in Goa is feni; Cashew feni is made from the fermentation of the fruit of the cashew tree, while coconut feni is made from the sap of toddy palms.

Goa has two World Heritage Sites: the Bom Jesus Basilica and a few designated convents. The Basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, regarded by many Catholics as the patron saint of Goa. Once every decade, the body is taken down for veneration and for public viewing. The last such event was conducted in 2004. The Velhas Conquistas regions are also known for its Goa-Portuguese style architecture.

In many parts of Goa, mansions constructed in the Indo-Portuguese style architecture still stand, though in some villages, most of them are in a dilapidated condition. Fontainhas in Panjim, has been declared a cultural quarter, and are used as a living museum showcasing the life, architecture and culture of Goa. Some influences from the Portuguese era are visible in some of Goa's temples, notably the Mangueshi Temple, although after 1961, many of these were demolished and reconstructed in the indigenous Indian style.

Football is widely popular in Goa, particularly around Margao where the main football stadium, located at the Fatorda, Margao. Football is also played in local fields, during the non-monsoon, non-planting season, particular in central coastal Goa. Many of the country's top NFL clubs such as the Vasco, Salgaocar, Dempo, Sporting Clube de Goa Franca Sporting Club de Goa and Churchill Brothers are based in Goa.

In recent decades, a growing influence of cricket is visible, in large part fuelled by the massive coverage this sport gets on national television, thus making an impact even in a part of South Asia which hardly had any contact with the British Empire.

The state's sole stadium is the Fatorda stadium, located near Margao. The stadium hosts both international football as well as cricket matches. Hockey is the third most popular sport. Goa used to be a traditional bastion of hockey talent, though in recent times its popularity has been decreasing.

For more information visit Virtual Tourist
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Nightlife in Goa

Though, Nightlife is not so popular in India, it is very much accepted in Goa, which bears much of the Portuguese culture and tradition. Goa is the best place in India to visit, if you love to fun and frolic through out the day and the night. Nightlife in Goa is exciting and there are many ways to spark up the evening. The people of Goa are fun lovers and it is very common to find families going out for a night of fun and merriment.

There are places where, almost every third house has a bar/restaurant. The place may not be anything very special, usually just a room in the house that has been opened to the public with a couple of chairs and a table. But the atmosphere is unique - totally relaxing and extremely favourable to an enjoyable night out with friends and family.

Most of the places serve exquisite seafood and other Goan delicacies and have well stocked bars. Titos, which is right on the beach in Goa are the hottest place to visit and to be seen at in Goa today. There's also a new discotheque 'The Beachotheque' where you can dance the night away. You can also check out Lidos in Dona Paula. But, if you are in the mood to dance to the tempo of the ocean, get together with your group of friends, some food and drink and hit the beach. No doubt, you will surely have a special night with the shimmering sand, the soothing moon and the bracing waves!
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Monsoon Season

From November until March, Goa has a wonderful climate with hot sunny days and cool nights. It starts to get hot by mid-march, increasing in temperature up until the end of May or the beginning of June, when the first rains come. It becomes very hot inland by April, but there is always a very refreshing breeze by the coast.

The monsoon season starts in early June and lasts until halfway through September. During this time there is a lot of rain and humidity. The monsoon season changes Goa's appearance enormously. There are no tourists, all the palm restaurants are taken down and the locals have a few months to themselves. The rivers swell and turn brown, the rice grows and the whole land becomes overgrown with fast growing plants and grass.

After September the temperature and humidity drops to a much more pleasant level, the restaurants are reconstructed and tourists return to the beaches. The peak season for tourists is in December and January, especially during the few weeks over Christmas and New Year.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Innoculations

Hepatitis A, Polio Typhoid and Malaria are all strongly recommended. Yellow Fever is essential if arriving within 6 days of visiting an infected country and Meningitis is sometimes required, dependent on the time of year and specific area visited. Please seek professional advice. If you have not previously been immunised against diphtheria, polio or tetanus this is an ideal opportunity to have the immunisations carried out.

The usual health advice applies as with most foreign countries. Don't drink the tap water or consume ice in drinks. Drink bottled water or use purification tablets.
Take care against dehydration and over exposure to the sun, by drinking lots of (bottled) water and use high factor sun creams.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Language in Goa

Up until the liberation in 1961, Portuguese was widely spoken and you will find that the older generation still speaks the language.
The main languages now spoken in Goa and taught in schools are Konkani and Marathi.
However, if your Goan languages are a little rusty you needn't worry as many in the tourist areas speak English and a lot of the road signs are also in English so it is very easy for the tourist to get from place to place and make themselves understood. Buses run fairly frequently and if you don't mind being packed in like a sardine in the blistering heat you will find them a cheap and effective way of getting around.
Taxis run from most of the hotels and tourist areas and are again a reliable way of travelling but you must ensure that they are firstly correctly licensed as there are many who tend to masquerade as taxi drivers to earn extra money who aren't licensed to carry passengers, may not even have a driving license and may not even be over the legal age to drive!
Also make sure that you agree a price in advance with them, even for short trips.
Motorbikes and scooters are a great way of getting around but make you sure you adhere to the safety procedures and have the correct paperwork.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

Accommodation in Goa

Goan accommodation will suit every taste, regardless of budget, preference on star rating or what facilities you may be looking for.
From backpacking lodges to luxury five star, Goa really does have everything on offer.
For those on a budget, there are a variety of quaint guest houses which you can stay in which will have basic facilities in sparce rooms or cosy family run establishments which will offer perhaps a few more comforts.
You can even have the option to stay in rural family houses with traditional mud floors and outhouses for wc and washing facilities.
Mid range hotels are high in number and will suit most tourists looking for somewhere close to the beach and town and to explore the surrounding areas from. type='text'>Panaji

Not just the state capital, Panaji offers visitors much more than the transport hub most visitors take it for.
Many say that Panaji is reminiscent of a Mediterranean town as it still retains much of its Portuguese heritage and in some parts could fool visitors into thinking they had come to a sleepy Iberian village.
All this intertwined with rickshaws darting around its narrow streets give Panaji a mix of East and West to enthrall and delight the visitor.
Visit our website at Remember the golden rule though - haggle hard and bag yourself a bargain!
Along the entrance to the beach are a number of restaurants and bars to choose from which offer a great selection of seafood dishes, brought in from that mornings haul by the local fishermen, western style breakfasts and a good range of vegetarian options.
The nightlife here is good with Pete's Bar and Tito's amongst the favourites which will open to the early hours. Due to local crackdowns on noise disturbance, few bars open late and most will calm down substantially by 10pm.
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800

When to Travel

Thousands of holidaymakers flock to Goa in the winter months to soak up the winter sunshine it has to offer - in fact temperatures can soar, which certainly attract British holidaymakers looking to get away from the grey UK winter.

The season to visit Goa runs from November to April and some great deals can be found during this time. It very much appealed to backpackers and hippies at that time and grew a reputation for being a laid back party destination. However, Goa soon shook off its 'hippy hangout' image and now appeals to all types of travellers from families to couples seeking a quiet retreat or something livelier. There is plenty to suit.
Another reason why Goa appeals to so many is the stretch of 25 miles of golden sand - bliss!
Visit our website at http://www.cooptravel.co.uk or call us on 0870 243 0800
